Stage 42 - Baker City OR, 111mi (179km)

My 10th and last state
Chilly morning - hard day of riding - 3 passes climbed - 6'000ft of elevation gain in total - beautiful day - my 10th state - Oregon - 10hrs of riding - Hamburger - Adam - Baker City, OR

The above key words briefly explain my day - it was a hard day of riding but a very beautiful one too. If I knew what to expect today I may have planned this day differently. However, I am here in Baker City, after 10hrs of riding, knackered but happy too.

Beautiful but chilly
 morning
The day started with a very chilly morning in the low 40's, which ended up not to be too bad as my first 20mi today were the climb of my first pass of today. I took breakfast in my room, a muffin and a yoghurt and made some coffee too. I hoped this would last for a couple of miles but I soon felt hungry again. I am still carrying some of my Hammer supplements and this helped for a while.

Adam from UK
Today I met two cyclists, Cassie from Durango (no picture) and Adam from the UK.

My life saver of today
I was planning to have something to eat at Oxbow, which is 12mi after I crossed the state line of Oregon. However, I did not feel like stopping and decided to keep on riding to Richland, which was another 30mi from Oxbow. Well, may be I underestimated this section a little bit, as the climbs on these 30mi were very hard and my energy continuously went down. At Halfway I ate my last Powerbar which helped me climb over the second pass of today. The downhill to Richland was a blast and with almost no pedaling for 8mi I stopped at a bar & grill for a Hamburger and fries.

Overlook back from my 3rd
 and last climb of today
Still 40mi to go, this stop was a life safer - after taking off again towards Baker City I felt surprisingly relaxed, full of energy and powerful in my legs. With another pass to climb it took me only 3hrs to get to Baker City - my first stop to overnight in Oregon. I have to get some rest now and a good night of sleep as tomorrow the hard Oregon Mountain climbs start - again three passes, all at 5'000ft....
