Today I have entered my 5th state - Kansas!
The hunting lodge is 1mi off the TransAm Trail, 0.5mi of
it along a gravel road. I set off together with Norma at 10.30AM for the 76mi
(122km) ride to Girard, Kansas. The only service area on the way is the
town of Golden City, about halfway. This is no ordinary service stop, however.
Golden City is the home of Cooky's Cafe, well known to cross-country cyclists
for the variety and excellence of its pies.
The interval between hills quickly
began to increase and their severity to decrease. Within an hour or two, the
terrain was rolling so gently that the rises were barely noticeable. There was
a light wind from the south. We reached the state line, crossed out of Missouri. 
Minutes later, we were in Pittsburg and enjoyed a short but leisurely break at the traditionally styled Harry's Cafe on Broadway, culminating for me in a large and tasty piece of lemon pie. The last 15mi toward Girard would not have been necessary as we both still felt yesterday’s exhausting ride.
However, with a warm welcome a Jenna’s B&B, all the hard rides from the last days were forgotten. What a beautiful site, a house built in 1907 by the first President of the state bank of Kansas in Girard.

Das Glück der eigenen Kraft und die Freiheit muss einmalig sein.
Im August habe ich mich für eine 8-Tägige Transalp angemeldet und bin nun
fleissig am trainieren. Mit den Höhenmetern wird es dieses Wochenende schwierig.
Das Wetter spielt verrückt. Angesagt ist Schnee bis auf 800m!!!
Ich wünsche dir eine gute Reise und viele schöne Augenblicke mit deinem Bike
Ps. Mich würden noch die Höhenmeter interessieren.

ReplyDeleteMy total elevation gain until Eureka (Kansas is 78'931feet (= 24'058 Hoehenmeter)...I can tell that I am happy to have finally arrived in Kansas...the total elevation feet so far does not surprise me as the Appalachians and Ozark Mountains are well known as hard climbs. Comparing to the West (Coloarado, Montana etc.) the big big Mountains are waiting but they will be more steady...hope this helps;-)
